The Florida Nurses Foundation exists to promote nursing and delivery of healthcare through the advancement of research, education and practice. Each year, funds are provided to registered nurses and students for scholarships and research grants.
The Foundation was established by members of the Florida Nurses Association in 1983. The first grants were given in 1986 at the Florida Nurses Association Convention. The FNF focus has evolved over time to include contributions to support nursing education and research and to provide assistance to nurses in need.
Mission In support of the mission of the Florida Nurses Association, the Florida Nurses Foundation (FNF) promotes optimal health care for Florida citizens through prudent stewardship of entrusted funds and through creative philanthropy focused on outcomes that support and advance the profession of nursing.
The initiatives of the Foundation are to :
- Develop financial support for research;
- Advance knowledge of the nursing profession;
- Encourage nursing research and career development; and
- Assist nurses in need.

Nurses in Need
The Nurses in Need Fund was established by the nurses of FNA to be able to give small grants to help nurses in immediate need of help. An initial fundraiser was held at a past convention with a donation from the District 5 Charitible trust along with a challenge at the House of Delegates that year. Since then the Foundation has helped several nurses with issues such as rent, or even a license renewal. Nurses must be able to document the need and the grants are usually available in 24-72 hours depending on completion of the application. The Foundation encourages you to donate to this fund to help colleagues in crisis.
- Undine Sams (District 5 Charitable Trust) - Fund for Nurses in Need
- Maureen Finney (District 5 Charitable Trust) - Fund for Nurses in Need Fund Katherine Gutwald/Lillian Smith (District 9 Fund)
- Paula Massey - Fund for Nurses in Need These funds are limited and based on availability and number of requests in a given budget year. Contact the Foundation office for information at (407) 896-3261 or email foundation@floridanurse.org.
Barbara Lumpkin Institute
The Barbara Lumpkin Institute exists to promote public policy education for nurses and friends of nursing. FNA has long been an advocate for nurses and healthcare policy, especially since many of FNA's legislative priorities exist to protect the health of Florida residents. The Barbara Lumpkin Institute supports public policy education through an annual symposium and financial support of nurses getting involved in healthcare policy.
