About the FNA Icon Awards
We are now accepting nominations! Submission Deadline June 30, 2023
The FNA honors excellence in professional nursing by recognizing individuals and groups who are recommended and selected by their peers for formal recognition. Nurses who are nominated excel, lead, and innovate through their exemplary
courage, community service, advocacy, research and innovation, and years of commitment to the profession. Receiving a peer award is one of the highest honors accorded a professional nurse. For that reason, the awards program of the FNA
shall be conducted fairly, impartially, and shall endeavor always to honor representative candidates worthy of the awards.
To nominate someone for an FNA ICON Award:
1. Download the Awards Nomination Guidelines and review the general procedures section and the individual award's requirements.
2. Fill out the Nomination Form which will include two letters of reference.
3. Submit the Awards packet containing form and two letters to the FNA Awards Committee:

FNA Phoenix Award

In honor of the extraordinary work and sacrifices of the nurses in Florida, the FNA Awards Committee has created a new award category with the specific purpose of honoring nurses who work at the bedside. The FNA Phoenix Award will recognize
nurses who rise to the occasion during very challenging circumstances.
This award will recognize two categories of registered nurses:
Seasoned Nurse Category
Nominee must have exhibited some of all of these behaviors or actions in their work:
- Clinical knowledge and skill
- Caring attitude
- Collegial and supportive behaviors
- Mentoring and support for colleagues
- Calm and stability in the face of challenges
- Professionalism and ethics
- Going above and beyond to provide quality care
- Promoting or inspiring teamwork
- Excellent communication skills
- Role Model
- Patient advocacy
- Advocacy for colleagues
Recent Graduate Category
Nominee must have exhibited some or all of the following behaviors or actions in their work:
- Willingness to learn and experience new challenges
- Teamwork and supportive behaviors
- Going above and beyond
- Patient advocacy
- Resilience and staying power
- Positive attitude in the face of adversity
- Ability to receive feedback
- Flexibility and adaptability
Additional Guidelines
- To nominate someone, submit nomination form with 400 – 500 word essay describing contributions during the pandemic as outlined in the above criteria. The winners will be selected based on the detail in their nomination and how they adhere
to the criteria above so be specific.
- Nominator and Nominee are NOT required to be an FNA Member for this category.
- Individuals may be nominated by individual peers or by their institutions
The Award will be selected in August and the winners will be notified before the FNA Membership Assembly in September. Please submit a headshot with the nomination if possible so that it can be used in the program and in other publications
and media outlets. We will also be designating a page on the FNA website to recognize these nurses. Award winners will be honored at the 2023 Awards Dinner Celebration during the Annual FNA Membership Assembly. The dinner will take place
on Thursday, September 21 from 7:30pm-9:00pm preceded by a reception at 6:30pm at the World Golf Village Renaissance St. Augustine Resort. All award winners, nominees, and nominators are encouraged to attend! To nominate a unit for the
FNA Phoenix Award, please submit nomination form and essay to the FNA Awards Committee.

FNA Awards Categories
Registered Nurse Practice Award
Honors an individual nurse, working in a role other than an advanced practice role, who has demonstrated excellence in a nursing practice setting.
Advanced Practice Nursing Icon Award
Recognizes an individual Advanced Practice Nurse who exemplifies excellence in performing the advanced practice role.
Nursing Administration Icon Award
Honors an outstanding administrative leader in nursing.
Undine Sams Award
Recognizes an individual staff nurse, collective bargaining eligible, who has made significant contributions to enhance the rights and welfare of nurses through labor employee relations and work place advocacy activities.
Communications Media Award
Honors an individual or group in the field of communications for production of written or electronic media which educates the public about nursing and nursing’s impact on health care.
Mary Cash Award
Recognizes an individual nurse who has made outstanding contributions to cultural diversity in nursing and health care.
Heather Scaglione Award
Recognizes an FNA member’s significant and outstanding contribution to support the work of the Florida Nursing Students’ Association and nursing students.
Special Recognition Award
Honors an individual, nurse, organization, or group for actions or programs consistent with the philosophy, goals, and mission of the Florida Nurses Association.
Promoting Environment for Excellence in Nursing Practice Icon Award
Honors employers, nursing service departments or other entities that create a work environment supportive of professional nursing practice.
Nurse Educator Icon Award
Honors an outstanding Nurse Educator.
Nursing Research Icon Award
Recognizes a nurse who has produced research of scientific merit with relevance to the practice of nursing.
Barbara Lumpkin Award
Recognizes a nurse who has made a significant impact in political and legislative issues affecting nurses, nursing, and quality health care.
Community Action Icon Award
Recognizes outstanding voluntary contributions by FNA members (group or individual) to the health and welfare of a community through an organized and systematic effort.
Education and Advocacy Icon Award
Recognizes a nursing education program that promotes professional activities and educates nursing students about advocacy through inclusion of related content in the curriculum and participation in related activities.
The Florida Nurses Association Hall of Fame
To recognize Florida nurses who have made sustained and enduring contributions of enduring value to the nursing profession.
Nursing Innovation and Creativity Icon Award
These awards will recognize individuals, groups or institutions who have demonstrated innovation and creativity in any area of nursing. Three awards will be presented. The innovation or creative endeavor may be demonstrated in the
area of patient care delivery, hands on care, research, education, community service, leadership and management or other areas not covered in the above categories. Please complete the form below and attach two letters of support for your
